Here are some frequently asked questions about The Leonardo.
1 ] WHY DOES SALT LAKE CITY/UTAH NEED SOMETHING LIKE THE LEONARDO?
2 ] HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? The total cost of creating The Leonardo is approximately $35 million, which includes rennovating and remodel the building, making seismic upgrades, and creating exhibits and programs. The Leonardo Capital Campaign has already raised $10 million through a public bond, and over $10 million in private and public donations.
3 ] WILL THE LEONARDO CHARGE ADMISSION? To ensure financial sustainability, The Leonardo will charge admission. We are currently conducting research in the community to determine the exact amount.
4 ] WHO SUPPORTS THIS PROJECT?
A variety of community, government, education and business leaders, as well as many individuals support The Leonardo because of the educational and economic benefits it will bring to Salt Lake City and the entire state.
5 ] HOW WILL THE LEONARDO BE DIFFERENT FROM THE DISCOVERY GATEWAY CHILDREN'S MUSEUM AND UTAH MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY?
The Leonardo will be unique in several ways:
6 ] HOW WILL THE LEONARDO SERVE STUDENTS AND RESIDENTS BEYOND SALT LAKE CITY? Even before it opens, The Leonardo is already bringing art-culture-science educational experiences to the students and teachers of Utah through an educational outreach effort called “The Leonardo on Wheels.”
7 ] HOW WILL THE LEONARDO SERVE UTAH AND THE SURROUNDING REGION?
The Leonardo is bringing a world class traveling exhibit, Body Worlds 3, to Salt Lake City opening September 19, 2008. Click here for more info.
The Leonardo is also participating in a variety of community events throughout the state. See calendar for more info.
8 ] WHY ARE YOU CHOOSING TO REHABILITATE AN OLD BUILDING VS. CONSTRUCTING A NEW ONE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE PROJECT? The cost of rehabilitating the existing building will cost approximately one third as much as creating a brand new facility. Rehabilitating the building will also preserve a well-loved destination—a place where the community has gathered for many years. This location will also enable The Leonardo to collaborate with the new City Library on many projects and events.
9 ] HOW WILL THE LEONARDO BE GOVERNED? WILL THE CITY AND/OR MAYOR BE INVOLVED? The Leonardo is an independent 501c3 non-profit organization governed by an independent board—The Library Square Foundation for Art, Culture and Science, dba The Leonardo Foundation. This governing structure is designed to insulate the organization from both local and state politics, and to provide a broad range of expert leadership, representation and input from the community.
