Peter Giles, Executive Director
Giles has 21 years experience in developing and operating science, technology and culture centers in California, Hawaii, and Utah. He spearheaded planning and fundraising efforts for The Tech Museum of Innovation (The Tech), a $113 million, internationally recognized museum in San Jose, where he was executive director for 18 years. After retiring from The Tech, Giles served as executive director for the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, a program of the University of Hawaii-Hilo. At the museum, he oversaw efforts to successfully open the facility within just six months of his arrival. Giles served as president of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, where he worked with Hewlett-Packard Company founder David Packard to set the tone and vision for the organization, which brought companies together to work with state and local government officials in addressing issues affecting the economy and quality of life. Giles was also corporate partnership officer for the San Jose Redevelopment Agency.
Giles has served on the board of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC), and received a fellowship from the Center for Excellence in Non-Profits to participate in Strategic Perspectives for Non-Profits at Harvard Business School. He also served on the board of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, dedicated to positive change through broad collaboration coalitions.
Alexandra Hesse, Associate Executive Director
Hesse brings extensive curatorial, project management and marketing experience in the arts, culture and entertainment sectors to The Leonardo. Most recently, Hesse managed the Stills Gallery in Sydney, Australia, where she oversaw educational programming, external partner relationships, touring and loans, and licensing agreements. Before that, Hesse worked as a project manager for Salt Lake Organizing Committee Creative Services during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and as project/exhibits manager for the Olympic Co-Ordination Authority in Sydney, Australia. She was instrumental in conceiving and bringing BODY WORLDS 3 to The Leonardo, and served as the Project Director.
Dennis Evans, Director of Operations
Dennis Evans is an experienced consultant with 35 years of management and finance expertise. He began his career at the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company (now Morgan-Chase), where he served as vice president of corporate finance in the New York, Oslo, and Stockholm offices. He then worked as the senior vice president of finance for Norwegian Cruise Line in Miami. While there, he helped prepare the company for a $150 million IPO, oversaw placement of a $120 million bond issue, organized several syndicated loans, and managed investor and banking relations. Evans also oversaw strategic planning, human resources, accounting and operations as the general manager for local retail establishments. Evans’ consulting experience has included writing business plans and conducting financial analyses and forecasting for both start-up and large, established organizations, including the current business plan for The Leonardo. He served as operations and finance director in bringing, organizing and staging The Leonardo’s hosting of BODY WORLDS 3.
