What's Happening now?
As The Leonardo prepares for opening day, our team is busy finishing exhibit plans, completing fundraising, and even running programs outside the building. Here’s a glimpse at what we’re up to.
Building Renovations
Thanks to the $10 million bond from Salt Lake City voters, funds from the Redevelopment Agency, as well as grants from FEMA and Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program, renovations on our future home — the old main library building — are underway. The city’s Public Services Department is overseeing the process, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010. Once that phase is finished, The Leonardo team can move in the exhibits, set up the café, and test and tinker to make sure everything is ready for opening day in Spring 2011.
You can keep up with progress on the renovations by reading our recent blog entries on the subject, including an update on that lovely orange carpet pictured above.
For The public
When The Leonardo opens permanently in Spring 2011, it will offer on-site exhibits, workshops, classes, teacher training, field trips and special events that explore the multidisciplinary worlds of science, technology and art. Until then, the center will host events with partners, online content, and a science outreach program for our virtual visitors. Take a look:
Leonardo After Hours
Hosted by USTAR and The Leonardo, Leonardo After Hours showcases some of the most exciting current research and inventions happening right here in our back yard. Click here for more information or to RSVP for our next event.
The Leo Online
The Leonardo may not open for a while, but you can follow our progress, and learn more about what we mean by science, technology and art online at The Leo Blog, Facebook and Twitter.
For teachers and Students
The Leo on Wheels
For the past five years, The Leo on Wheels outreach program has traveled to schools throughout Utah, serving nearly 12,000 students each year. Click here to learn more or schedule a visit.
STEM Works: Biotechnology
The Leonardo's STEM Works: Biotechnology program is a collection of interactive, job-related biotech exhibits that travel the greater Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The program draws its name from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics — disciplines critical to Utah's economic growth.
Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair
The Leonardo is a sponsor of the 2010 Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair, which is March 25 and 26 at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus. SLVSEF brings hundreds of students from five school districts together to compete for fun, prizes and a great educational experience. Winners get to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. To learn more about the fair, how to enter, and what it takes to create a winning project, click here.
