The civil rights movement is often associated with figures like Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks and the work done in the South, but Friday night, Utah civil rights heroes were honored for the work they did in the 1950s and '60s.

Post the recent MLK holiday, Leonardo’s moving exhibit of photographs taken by civil rights activists will continue through May. “This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement” produced by the Center for Documentary Expression and Art uses 156 photos to chronicle the Civil Rights struggle led by King between 1963 and 1968.

The Leonardo museum has undergone its second management change in three years, but this time, administrators say, the power handoff was planned and not related to the museum’s performance. Former executive director Peter Giles will return to retirement in California and associate director Alexandra Hesse will take over the top role, according to a Friday news release.
