The Leonardo, Salt Lake Center for Science Education Host Legislator Family Night with Hands-on Science

SALT LAKE CITY (Jan. 29, 2009)- The Leonardo and The Salt Lake Center for Science Education will host a Legislator Family Night for Utah lawmakers on Monday, Feb. 1 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. featuring hands-on exhibits from The Leonardo's educational outreach program, The Leo on Wheels. The event will take place in conjunction with an open house at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education, a local charter school, located at 1400 W. Goodwin Ave. (1150 N.) in Salt Lake City. 

The Leo on Wheels is the educational outreach program of The Leonardo, a science, technology and art center for young people and adults under development in downtown Salt Lake City. The Leo on Wheels serves about 30 schools and more than 12,000 students each year. The program currently provides a hands-on science experience for students in middle and junior high schools throughout the state.

The Leo on Wheels features 12-15 interactive exhibits that support Utah State Core Curriculum for grades seven through nine. Legislators and their families, as well as students and parents from the school will

• Micro-Worlds - See what everyday objects look like when magnified 200 times under a microscope.

• Generator Bike - Convert the energy in your legs into electrical energy while comparing the energy input needed to power incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs.

• Digital Anatomy - Navigate through human anatomy (internal and external) with a computer dissection of a real cadaver. 

• Van de Graaff Generator - Learn about the "shocking" and "hair raising" effects of electricity.

In addition to The Leo on Wheels activities, The Salt Lake Center for Science Education is opening its doors to the public for classroom and lab tours, as well as the premier of the school's energy videos-a a special science/art project-in the auditorium beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Funded partially by the Utah Legislature through the Utah State Office of Education, The Leo on Wheels is also supported by local industry and foundations, including: Rockwell Collins, L-3 Communications, Battelle, Energy Solutions Foundation, The Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation, ARUP Laboratories, Idaho National Laboratory, ATK, Qwest, XMission and Larry H. Miller Charities

About The Leonardo

Opening in 2011, The Leonardo is a science, technology and art center for young people and adults. From its downtown Salt Lake City location, The Leonardo will host multidisciplinary exhibits, workshops, art installations, classes and other events that explore creativity and innovation from a variety of perspectives.

The Salt Lake Center for Science Education

The Salt Lake Center for Science Education, a science focus charter school, is a partnership between Salt Lake City School District, University of Utah, and Utah Museum of Natural History. The Center is devoted to creating an environment where a diverse group of children engage in real-world experiences while connecting curriculum across subject areas and grades. "Problem-solvers" ask researchable and relevant questions, design logical and feasible plans, and publicly present conclusions and recommendations.
