The Leonardo and Salt Lake City continue to work toward finding a way to bridge the building renovation funding gap. Currently, we are reviewing and refining the business plan to ensure our model is as sustainable as possible for the long term. The Salt Lake City Council also voted to move forward with the 2.5M pending the FEMA confirmation for seismic and asbestos. See www.theleonardo.org often for updates.

Last month, The Leonardo announced the formation of an advisory team that is helping shape our business and operations plan. The team is made up of local and national experts from the business and museum communities. The Leonardo has also been working closely with Salt Lake City’s administration, city council members, council staff, as well as a group of outside consultants retained by the council, to review and refine our plans.
In the release, City Councilman Eric Jergensen congratulated The Leonardo on the diligence with which it is approaching its business planning process: “I greatly admire The Leonardo for its willingness to seek the advice of outside experts,” said Eric Jergensen, Salt Lake City Council member. “The board and executive team have been extremely open to input from the council and our staff. We look forward to continuing to work together to bring this project to fruition.”

In early October, the Utah Science Center hosted Utah’s National Conversation on Climate Action at The Leonardo. The event brought local government leaders, educators and scientists together to discuss the science behind climate change—and what is being done at state and city levels to address the issue. The National Conversation was sponsored by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, and the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC). Local leaders in attendance included Salt Lake County Mayor Corroon, Murray City Energy Services Manager Dan Stireman, and Moab City Mayor David Sakrison. Experts from the National Weather Service, the State of Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center, as well as local businesses also participated. |
The Leonardo on Wheels educational outreach programs are in full swing. The science component, operated by the Utah Science Center, has already visited schools in Provo, Magna, Salt Lake, Morgan, Payson and Eden. The documentary arts arm of the “on Wheels” program, which Center for Documentary Arts runs, added a new exhibit titled “Sacred Images: A Vision of Native American Rock Art”—to the traveling program. The Leonardo on Wheels—Documentary Arts has already been to several Salt Lake-area schools, including Vernal.
