Urban Art

Grades 10, 11, and 12
Monday, July 16 - Friday, July 20, 1-4pm

$165 per student; $135 for members of The Leo

Every so often you see something original on an otherwise empty wall—a piece of “urban art” that brings color, curiosity and originality to a cityscape. Most times the artist worked without being paid, just for the opportunity of making a moment, a surprise, a gift to an overlooked site.

In this workshop, students will work with two artists who have contributed to the urban art scene in Salt Lake City. They’ll visit local examples of urban art, and learn the same techniques used by the artists.

Cost: $165 per student; $135 for members of The Leo.  Space is limited! To register, contact Jen Cassidy via e-mail or at (801) 531-9800 extn. 131.

Fleas, Fractals and Physics:
Decoding Nature with Science, Math and Art

Grades 7, 8, and 9
Monday, June 25 - Friday, June 29, 9am-noon
or
Monday, July 30 - Friday, August 3, 1pm-4pm

$165 per student; $135 for members of The Leo

Fractal geometry is everywhere in nature. Take a close look at ferns or clouds and notice the repeating geometric patterns. A growing understanding of the mathematics behind fractals are giving us deeper insights into nature, inspiring innovation across disciplines—from filmmakers and fashion designers, to physicians and researchers.

In this workshop, we will observe fractals in nature and then create designs based on their interpretations.  We’ll also tap into the physical sciences by using the chaos theory to create a moving object with commonly discarded items like circuits, wires and motors.

Cost: $165 per student; $135 for members of The Leo.  Space is limited! To register, contact Jen Cassidy via e-mail or at (801) 531-9800 extn. 131.

Summer Camps for Kids

Math, Music, and Digital Media

Grades 5 & 6
Monday, July 9 - Friday, July 13, 9am-noon
or
Monday, August 6 - Friday, August 10, 1pm-4pm

$165 per student; $135 for members of The Leo

The intersections between music and mathematics have fascinated scholars and musicians for centuries. Researchers have even proven that certain pieces of music are more popular due to their mathematical structures.

In this camp, we’ll examine math-music connections through hands-on explorations, experimenting with sound making and visualization and documenting our findings with digital media. At the end of the workshops, each participant will take home a self-made digital piece of their cool discoveries.

Cost: $165 per student; $135 for members of The Leo.  Space is limited! To register, contact Jen Cassidy via e-mail or at (801) 531-9800 extn. 131.
