The GEOGRAPHY OF Exodus

Forging connections through understanding

By downloading Google Earth and the Salgado/Google Earth Layer (KMZ) file you can view Salgado images in their geographical setting.

Special thanks to Steven McQuinn for putting together this presentation.

Google Earth and Quicktime download introductions:

The Google Earth file, Salgado_TheLeonardo.kmz, will automatically open in Google Earth if you already have the viewer installed. It is a KMZ file, the compressed format for Google Earth. The file size is 1.4 MB. When it opens in Google Earth, you will see three tours available, with the first two tours activated (the boxes checked). To let these tours run in show mode, highlight either of the first two tour folders and click the little wedge arrow at the bottom right of the My Places pane. To view the third tour, click off the first two tours and click on the last one, highlighting it, then run the tour. You can also visit any stop on a tour in any order by clicking on its name. You can annotate and save these tours as you wish.

The first tour provides an overview flight of the exhibit floor, including both the picture galleries and the activity areas.

The second tour takes you around the world to visit the locations of 14 pictures shown in the galleries.

The third tour, Global Exodus, is a regional overview of the areas photographed by Salgado for this exhibit. It should be left off while visiting the other two tours, and the other tours should be left off when Global Exodus is running.

For all these tours, certain images load over the internet. You will see a "Loading" message as they are retrieved.

The Mac version of Google Earth, in development, is not yet available. In the meantime, here is a Quicktime7 movie showing an overview of Salgado's Exodus exhibit, occupying the main floor of The Leonardo at Library Square. It is a 1.7 MB file but will stream so you can view it while it loads. You will need the Quicktime 7 player, as the compression used for this movie is exclusive to that version.
