LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS

  • To help students understand the movement of refugees, exiles, and migrants in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, in the last decade of the twentieth century.
  • To help students understand the connection between the global movement of peoples and the increasing diversification of our communities (Salt Lake City today is considered one of five, new, national centers for the resettlement of refugees and immigrants).
  • To help students understand the role of photojournalists and documentary photographers in our society and to appreciate the vision of Sebastião Salgado.
  • To introduce students to the concept of documentary work as a method by which we can explore and depict the world around us.
  • To encourage students to translate their exhibit experiences into various forms of written or visual communication.

Themes and Curriculum Ties:

World History, Geography for Life, Life Skills, Media Literacy, Language Arts, Visual Arts Multiple connections can be made with the curriculum in each of the above mentioned areas. Here are some specific standards:

World History

  • Examine political developments of Europe;
    e.g., Eastern European unrest.
  • Examine the reasons for war;
    e.g., religion, politics, power, economics.
  • Discuss the consequences of war on Europe, Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East;
    e.g., poverty, famine, disease, destruction of life and property.

  • Discuss the impact of economic and political organizations on global relations.

  • Examine the role of technology in modifying the physical environment.
  • Explore how nations and cultures are linked through transportation, communication, language, currency, goods, and services.

Visual Arts

  • Examine photography projects according to history, geography, and personal experience.
  • Discuss and choose ideas, subject matter, symbols, meanings, and purposes for artworks.
  • Identify subject matter, metaphor, themes, symbols, and content in photography.
  • Analyze and reflect on works of art by their elements and principles.
