THE EXHIBIT VISIT
Handout Review: Pass out the Photo Log. Review the instructions. Make sure each student has a notebook and pencil. Explain to students that when they return to school, they will use their Logs for discussion and to develop their own project about the exhibit experience.
Orientation: Before starting the tour, provide students with a quick orientation to the exhibit space. Explain to students that there will be BOTH images and descriptions that address the location and people photographed there.
Monitor: Check in with students as they progress through the exhibit. Make sure they are taking time in each area of the installation.
If possible, use the audio-visual space provided at the end of the exhibit to ask students the following:
- What does it mean to be on the move, to be part of an “Exodus”?
- Why would a person photo-document people on the move?
- Why it is important to explore and understand the forces behind migration, including poverty, famine, political or religious conflict, or unemployment?
- Why should we look at photographs that depict painful or disturbing scenes?
